How to Prepare for Fall & Cut Your Home Energy Bill
With every season change comes opportunities to limit the amount of energy your home is using. Keep reading for tips on reducing your home energy bill.
With every season change comes opportunities to limit the amount of energy your home is using—and limit your bill! Once the temperatures start to dip, try implementing these tips.
Minimize Your Home Energy Bill this Fall
There are several areas of your home where minimal adjustment will make a big impact on your home energy bill.
Your Thermostat
If you live in the South, you know the start of fall is a little rocky in terms of temperature. One day it feels like summer’s back, and the next it’s like winter’s already here! Instead of changing your thermostat daily to reflect the day’s random temperatures, try dressing for the temperature instead. If things are on the chillier side, leave the thermostat alone and grab a sweater or jacket! If things are on the warmer side, get those fans going and dress comfortably.
Your Water Heater
When you go to take a shower or run a bath, do you turn the water as hot as it will go? Odds are, you don’t! Lowering the temperature of your water heater by just 10 degrees can significantly lengthen the overall lifespan of your water heater. You’ll be able to lower your energy bill by about 3% and you probably won’t even notice the difference when using your hot water.
Your Gutters
You might not think about this one very often, but keeping your gutters clean and clear can help you save money down the road. If you don’t keep them clear of debris, water can gather around your roof and in your basement. This can lead to excess moisture and humidity, rust and decay, and leaks. Cleaning out your gutters a few times a year (and especially in the fall with all those leaves!) can go a long way in avoiding these things and saving you money.
Your Windows & Doors
Here’s a scary statistic: leaks around your house can cost you anywhere from 5–30% more on your home energy bill. Every little crack or gap you take care of will make a big difference in your savings! Now’s the time of year to check all of the weather stripping around your home’s windows and doors, and replace whatever needs replacing.
