Overview

Moving to a new home does not mean starting over with Shipshape. Your account, your subscription, and everything you have built travels with you. This guide walks you through what to do with your current home's data, how to set up your new home, and how to handle the monitoring hardware during the transition.

Your Account Goes With You

Your Shipshape account is tied to you, not to your address. When you move:

  • Your account stays active
  • Your subscription continues without interruption
  • Your login credentials remain the same
  • You can add your new home and keep your old home (or archive it)

There is nothing to cancel and re-create. Just add a new home to your existing account.

What Happens to Your Current Home

You have two options for the home you are leaving:

Option 1: Keep It in Your Account

If you are keeping the property (rental, vacation home, investment), simply leave it in your account. You can manage multiple homes from the same Shipshape account and switch between them in the app.

This is a good choice if:

  • You are converting the home to a rental property
  • A family member will continue living there
  • You want to maintain the monitoring during the sale process

Option 2: Archive It

If you are selling the home and will no longer be involved with it, you can archive the home profile. Archiving preserves your Home Health Record but removes the home from your active dashboard.

How to archive:

  1. Open the Shipshape Home app
  2. Tap the home name at the top to switch to the home you are leaving
  3. Go to Menu → Settings → Home Settings
  4. Tap Archive Home

Your Home Health Record is preserved either way. This matters because your HHR is a valuable document, even after you move out.

Using Your HHR as a Selling Tool

Before you leave, consider sharing your Home Health Record with the buyer or your real estate agent. A complete HHR demonstrates:

  • Every major system has been documented and tracked
  • Maintenance was performed on schedule
  • Equipment age and condition are fully transparent
  • The home was actively monitored (if you had the monitored tier)

This level of documentation builds buyer confidence and can strengthen your negotiating position. Think of it like a vehicle history report, but for your home.

How to share: Export a PDF from the app (Home → Share Home Health Record → PDF Export) and provide it to your agent or include it in your listing materials.

Setting Up Your New Home

Creating a new home profile is quick and follows the same steps as your original setup:

  1. Open the Shipshape Home app
  2. Tap Menu
  3. Select Add Home
  4. Enter your new address
  5. Review and confirm the pre-populated property details (Shipshape pulls public data like year built and square footage)
  6. Name your new home (e.g., "Austin House," "New Place")

Once created, you can start building your new Home Health Record immediately. Use the AI equipment scan to photograph and catalog the major systems in your new home.

Moving the Monitoring Hardware

If you own the monitoring hardware (gateway and sensors) and want to bring it to your new home, your service professional can help with the relocation.

What the process looks like:

  1. Before moving day: Contact your service professional to schedule a hardware removal at the old home and installation at the new one. Some providers handle both in the same visit if the homes are nearby.

  2. At the old home: The technician disconnects the gateway and removes the snap-on sensors. This takes about 10 to 15 minutes and leaves no marks or damage.

  3. At the new home: The technician installs the gateway, places sensors on your new HVAC, water heater, and electrical panel, and connects everything to your new home profile. This typically takes 20 to 30 minutes.

  4. SAM starts learning. Once the hardware is connected at the new home, SAM begins collecting data and learning the patterns of your new systems immediately.

Timing tip: Schedule the new home installation for the first week after your move. This gives SAM the earliest possible start on learning your new home's patterns.

Leaving Hardware for the Next Owner

If you are selling your home and want to include Shipshape monitoring as a feature for the buyer, you can transfer the hardware along with the home.

How to coordinate a transfer:

  1. Talk to your service professional about transferring the home to the new owner's account
  2. The new owner creates a Shipshape account (or your provider helps them set one up)
  3. The home profile, equipment inventory, and sensor connections are transferred to the new owner
  4. The new owner starts fresh with their own alerts and monitoring history

This can be a strong selling point. A home that comes with active, professional monitoring is more attractive to buyers, especially those who value smart home technology and proactive maintenance.

New Home Setup Checklist

Once you are settled in your new home, here is the complete setup process:

  • [ ] Create a new home profile in the app with your new address
  • [ ] Run the AI equipment scan to photograph and catalog major systems
  • [ ] Connect with a service professional in your new area (or keep your existing one if they service both locations)
  • [ ] Schedule hardware installation if you are bringing sensors and the gateway
  • [ ] Review the Home Health Assessment to identify any immediate concerns with the new home's systems
  • [ ] Set up notifications for your new home (check that alert preferences carry over the way you want)
  • [ ] Explore integrations to connect any smart home devices already in the new home

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I lose my old home's data when I move? No. Your Home Health Record for the old home is preserved whether you keep it active or archive it. You can export it as a PDF at any time.

Can I have both homes active at the same time? Yes. Shipshape supports multiple homes on one account. You can keep both active and switch between them in the app.

What if my new home already has Shipshape installed? If the previous owner had Shipshape and left the hardware, your service professional can connect the existing sensors to your new account. No new hardware purchase is needed.

Do I need a new subscription for the new home? Each home requires its own subscription for monitoring features. If you are keeping both homes, each one needs an active plan.

What if my new home is in a different state? No problem. Shipshape works nationwide. You may need to connect with a service professional local to your new area, but your account and subscription are not affected by location.

Can I transfer my subscription to someone else? Subscriptions are tied to your account. If you want the next owner to have Shipshape, they would set up their own account and subscription. Your service professional can help coordinate this.
