Homeowner Summary

When SAM detects a critical event in your home — a water leak, a door opened during an alarm state, or a temperature plummeting toward pipe-freezing levels — a push notification on your phone might not be enough. The Aeotec Siren 6 and Doorbell 6 add audible and visual alerts directly in your home, ensuring that critical warnings are impossible to miss even if your phone is on silent, in another room, or out of battery.

The Siren 6 is designed as an indoor alarm. It produces loud audible tones (up to 105 dB — equivalent to a chainsaw at close range) and has a built-in LED ring that flashes in configurable colors. When SAM triggers a water leak alert, the Siren can sound a distinctive tone and flash blue. When a security event occurs, it can blast a full alarm siren with red flashing. Different tones for different events mean you know what is happening before you even check your phone.

The Doorbell 6 serves double duty: it functions as a traditional wireless doorbell (with an included outdoor button) and as a notification device for SAM alerts. It supports over 30 built-in chime tones, adjustable volume, and LED color customization. It is less aggressive than the Siren (up to 95 dB) and better suited for everyday notifications like "your garage door has been open for 20 minutes."

Both devices plug directly into a standard wall outlet (no batteries to replace), communicate via Z-Wave Plus, and integrate with SmartThings automations so that any SAM alert can trigger a specific sound and light pattern.

How It Works

Both the Siren 6 and Doorbell 6 are Z-Wave Plus mains-powered devices. Because they are always powered, they also serve as Z-Wave signal repeaters, strengthening your mesh network for other devices. Each device contains a speaker, an LED ring, and a Z-Wave radio.

Siren 6 (ZWA003):

  • Contains 8 built-in siren tones, each assignable to different Z-Wave endpoints. This means SAM can trigger tone 1 for water leaks, tone 2 for security events, tone 3 for temperature alerts, and so on — each with its own sound and LED color.
  • Volume is adjustable from 0 to 100% in the Z-Wave configuration.
  • The LED ring supports multiple colors (red, green, blue, yellow, cyan, magenta, white) and patterns (solid, flash, pulse).
  • Responds to standard Z-Wave Notification and Siren command classes.

Doorbell 6 (ZWA005):

  • Contains 30+ chime tones plus the ability to load custom sounds via USB.
  • Includes a waterproof outdoor doorbell button that communicates directly with the indoor unit via Z-Wave.
  • Volume adjustable from 0 to 100%.
  • LED ring with configurable colors for different events.
  • Can function simultaneously as a doorbell and a notification device for SAM alerts.

Maintenance Guide

DIY (Homeowner)

  • No battery maintenance — Both devices are mains-powered. Simply keep them plugged in.
  • Test monthly — Trigger a test alarm through the SmartThings app to confirm the device is functioning and audible.
  • Clean the outdoor button (Doorbell 6) — Wipe the doorbell button with a damp cloth periodically. Check that it has not been painted over or obstructed.
  • Volume adjustment — If the alarm is too loud or too quiet for your space, adjust through the SmartThings app.

Professional

  • Verify automation triggers — During service visits, trigger each configured SAM alert type and confirm the correct tone and LED color activate.
  • Check outdoor button battery (Doorbell 6) — The wireless doorbell button runs on a CR2032 coin cell with approximately 3-year life. Replace during service visits when low.
  • Test audibility in bedrooms — From each bedroom with doors closed, trigger the siren and confirm it is audible. Recommend additional units for large homes if necessary.
  • Update firmware — Check for OTA updates through the SmartThings hub.

Warning Signs

  • Device does not sound when triggered (check that the outlet has power, device is still paired)
  • Volume is noticeably lower than previously (speaker degradation after years of use — rare but possible)
  • LED ring is partially dark (individual LEDs can fail)
  • Outdoor doorbell button stops working (battery dead, button damaged by weather)
  • Device is warm or hot to the touch (unplug immediately and replace)

Common Failure Modes

  • Outlet power loss — If the outlet is on a switched circuit or GFCI that trips, the device goes offline silently. Plug into an always-on outlet.
  • Z-Wave endpoint confusion — With 8 endpoints, the Siren 6 can sometimes pair with only the default endpoint active. Verify all needed endpoints are accessible in the SmartThings app.
  • Speaker buzzing — At maximum volume over extended periods, the speaker can develop a buzzing resonance. Reduce volume or replace the unit if persistent.
  • Outdoor button range — The doorbell button communicates directly with the indoor unit. Maximum range is approximately 150 feet line of sight, reduced to 50-80 feet through walls. If the button is unreliable, install the indoor unit on the same floor and same side of the house as the front door.

Diagnostic Procedures

  1. No sound on trigger — Verify the device is powered (LED ring should respond to button press). Check volume parameter is not set to 0. Verify the correct endpoint is being triggered by the automation.
  2. Wrong tone plays — Review the automation configuration. Each tone is a separate Z-Wave endpoint. Ensure the automation targets the correct endpoint number for the desired tone.
  3. LED not matching configuration — Power cycle the device by unplugging for 10 seconds. If the issue persists, reconfigure the LED parameters.
  4. Doorbell button not triggering — Replace the CR2032 battery. Re-pair the button by pressing it while the indoor unit is in pairing mode.

Shipshape Integration

The Siren 6 and Doorbell 6 serve as SAM's "voice" inside the home. They transform digital alerts into physical, unmissable notifications that reach homeowners even when their phones are not accessible.

SAM Monitoring:

  • SAM controls the Siren and Doorbell through SmartThings automations. Each critical alert type maps to a specific tone and LED pattern.
  • Device online/offline status is monitored. If the Siren goes offline, SAM notes the loss of audible alerting capability and increases the urgency of push and SMS notifications as compensation.
  • SAM can escalate alerts over time: first a gentle chime, then a louder alarm if the condition persists or worsens.

Home Health Score:

  • Having an audible alert device installed improves the "responsiveness" dimension of the Home Health Score, as it increases the likelihood that critical alerts will be acted upon promptly.
  • The Siren and Doorbell serve as Z-Wave repeaters, which improves mesh network reliability and indirectly benefits the connectivity dimension of the score.

Alert Routing:

  • Water leak: Siren activates immediately with water-specific tone. SAM simultaneously sends push, SMS, and dealer notification. The siren continues until the water alert is acknowledged or the alarm duration timeout is reached.
  • Security: Full siren alarm with red LED. The alarm auto-silences after the configured duration (default 3 minutes) but can be extended or silenced via the SmartThings app.
  • Temperature critical: Intermittent warning tone with yellow LED. Less aggressive than security but persistent enough to wake a sleeping homeowner.

Dealer Dashboard:

  • Dealers see which homes have audible alert devices installed and which do not.
  • Alert response times are tracked. Homes with Siren/Doorbell devices typically show faster response times to critical alerts, which dealers can reference when recommending the devices to other customers.
  • Siren activation history is logged, providing dealers with a record of critical events and homeowner response patterns.
