Shipshape Smart Monitoring Hardware
Homeowner Summary
Shipshape's smart monitoring hardware is a set of snap-on sensors that give SAM real-time visibility into your home's critical systems — HVAC, water, and electrical. Unlike traditional smart home devices that require rewiring or professional installation, Shipshape sensors attach directly to existing equipment with no wires, no cutting into pipes, and no electrician required. Your service professional can install the full kit during a routine visit in about 30 minutes.
The sensors feed continuous data to SAM, enabling it to detect problems early — an HVAC compressor working harder than normal, a slow water leak behind a wall, or an electrical circuit drawing unusual power. Without sensors, SAM relies on equipment age and service history alone. With sensors, SAM sees what is actually happening in real time.
Monitoring hardware is optional. SAM provides significant value from your Home Health Record alone. But sensors unlock the most powerful layer of protection: anomaly detection and real-time alerting that can catch problems hours or days before you would notice them yourself.
What the Sensors Monitor
HVAC Monitoring
- Supply and return air temperature — Detects performance degradation, improper refrigerant charge, or failing components
- Runtime patterns — Tracks how often and how long your system runs, flagging unusual cycles
- Energy consumption — Monitors power draw to identify efficiency decline over time
- Filter pressure differential — Indicates when airflow is restricted due to a dirty filter
Water Monitoring
- Flow rate and volume — Detects abnormal water usage that could indicate a leak
- Leak detection — Sensors placed at high-risk points (water heater, under sinks, near washing machine) alert immediately on moisture contact
- Temperature — Monitors water heater output temperature for consistency and safety
Electrical Monitoring
- Circuit-level power consumption — Tracks energy use by circuit to identify waste or anomalies
- Voltage and frequency stability — Detects power quality issues that can damage equipment
- Load patterns — Learns your home's normal electrical profile and flags deviations
Installation
Shipshape sensors are designed for zero-disruption installation:
- Snap-on design — Sensors clip onto existing pipes, wires, and equipment. No drilling, no cutting, no adhesive on finished surfaces
- No wiring required — Every sensor is battery-powered or uses low-voltage power harvesting
- Professional install — Your service professional handles placement during a regular visit, typically in 20 to 30 minutes for a full kit
- No damage to equipment — Sensors do not modify, tap into, or void the warranty on any existing system
Battery Life and Power
- HVAC sensors — 2 to 3 year battery life under normal conditions
- Water leak sensors — 3 to 5 year battery life (low-power, event-driven)
- Electrical monitors — Powered by current transformer (CT) clamp; no battery needed
- Low battery alerts — SAM notifies you well in advance when any sensor battery is running low, and your service professional can replace batteries during the next visit
Connectivity
Shipshape sensors communicate through a dedicated home hub:
- Primary connection — WiFi (2.4 GHz, compatible with all standard home routers)
- Cellular backup — Built-in LTE failover ensures monitoring continues even if your internet goes down
- Local mesh — Sensors communicate with each other and the hub via low-power radio (similar to Zigbee/Z-Wave range), so sensors in distant parts of the home stay connected
- Cloud sync — Data is transmitted to Shipshape's cloud in real time, where SAM processes and analyzes it
Data Collection and Privacy
What Data Is Collected
- Environmental readings (temperature, humidity, moisture presence)
- Equipment performance metrics (runtime, energy draw, flow rates)
- Device health data (battery level, signal strength, connectivity status)
What Is NOT Collected
- No audio or video recording
- No personally identifiable information from the sensors themselves
- No monitoring of personal devices, browsing, or activity within the home
Privacy Approach
- Data ownership — Your home data belongs to you. You can export or delete it at any time
- Encryption — All data is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.3) and at rest (AES-256)
- Minimal collection — Sensors collect only what is needed for home health monitoring. Nothing more
- Dealer access — Your service professional sees only the data relevant to the systems they service, and only while you have an active relationship with them
- No data sales — Shipshape does not sell your home data to third parties
Monitoring Kit Pricing
| Component | Cost | |-----------|------| | Full monitoring kit (HVAC + water + electrical) | $250 - $600 one-time | | Monthly monitoring service | $12 - $15/month | | Professional installation | Included with kit purchase | | Battery replacement | Included with active monitoring subscription |
Pricing varies based on home size and the number of systems being monitored. Your service professional will recommend the right configuration during your Home Health Assessment.
