Does Shipshape Work with Starlink Internet?

Overview

Yes, Shipshape works with Starlink. If you have Starlink satellite internet, you can connect your Shipshape Gateway and get full monitoring capabilities just like any other internet connection.

The only thing you need is an ethernet connection between your Starlink router and the Shipshape Gateway. Depending on which generation of Starlink hardware you have, this is either plug-and-play or requires one small adapter. This guide covers all three Starlink generations and how to connect each one.

Why This Question Comes Up

Shipshape's gateway uses a wired ethernet connection for reliability and security, not WiFi. Since Starlink is a satellite-based service, some homeowners wonder if the system is compatible. The answer is simple: once data reaches your Starlink router, it behaves like any other internet connection. The gateway does not care how your internet gets to the router, only that it can connect via ethernet.

The original Starlink router has a built-in ethernet port.

Setup:

  1. Locate the ethernet port on the back of your Starlink router
  2. Connect the Shipshape ethernet cable from the gateway to the Starlink router
  3. Plug in the gateway power adapter
  4. Wait 2 minutes for the gateway to boot up
  5. Follow the standard gateway pairing steps in the Shipshape app

No additional hardware needed. Plug in and go.

The Gen 2 Starlink router does not have a built-in ethernet port. This is the one generation that requires an extra piece of hardware.

What you need: The official Starlink Ethernet Adapter, available from the Starlink shop. This small adapter plugs into the back of the Gen 2 router and adds an ethernet port.

Important: Only the official Starlink Ethernet Adapter works with Gen 2 hardware. Third-party USB-C ethernet adapters are not compatible.

Setup:

  1. Purchase and connect the Starlink Ethernet Adapter to your Gen 2 router
  2. Connect the Shipshape ethernet cable from the gateway to the adapter's ethernet port
  3. Plug in the gateway power adapter
  4. Wait 2 minutes for the gateway to boot up
  5. Follow the standard gateway pairing steps in the Shipshape app

Once the adapter is in place, everything works exactly the same as other Starlink generations.

The Gen 3 Starlink router has a built-in ethernet port, similar to Gen 1.

Setup:

  1. Locate the ethernet port on the back of your Gen 3 Starlink router

Quick Reference

| Starlink Generation | Built-in Ethernet? | Extra Hardware Needed? | |--------------------|:---:|---| | Gen 1 (Round Dish) | Yes | None | | Gen 2 (Rectangular Dish) | No | Starlink Ethernet Adapter | | Gen 3 (Standard Actuated) | Yes | None |

Shipshape sensors send small amounts of data at regular intervals. They are not streaming video or transferring large files. Even with Starlink's slightly higher latency compared to cable or fiber internet, the performance is more than sufficient for home monitoring.

You will not notice any difference in app responsiveness, alert speed, or data accuracy when using Starlink versus a traditional wired ISP.

Shipshape Works with Any Internet Provider

While this article focuses on Starlink, it is worth noting that Shipshape is compatible with any internet service provider as long as your router has an available ethernet port (or you can add one).

This includes:

  • Cable internet (Comcast/Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox, etc.)
  • Fiber internet (AT&T Fiber, Google Fiber, Verizon Fios, etc.)
  • DSL internet (AT&T, CenturyLink, etc.)
  • Fixed wireless (T-Mobile Home Internet, Verizon Home, etc.)
  • Satellite internet (Starlink, HughesNet, Viasat)

The only requirement is an ethernet port. If your router does not have one, a small network switch or ethernet adapter will do the trick.

Good to know: If you use a mesh WiFi system (Eero, Google Nest WiFi, Orbi, etc.) in addition to your ISP's equipment, connect the Shipshape Gateway to the main base unit of your mesh system. See our Eero setup guide for a detailed walkthrough.

Gateway is not connecting after plugging in

  • Confirm the ethernet cable is securely connected on both ends
  • Make sure your Starlink service is active and online (check the Starlink app)
  • If using Gen 2, verify you are using the official Starlink Ethernet Adapter
  • Restart the Starlink router and wait for it to reconnect before powering on the gateway

Intermittent connectivity

  • Starlink can experience brief outages during "obstructed" periods (trees, buildings blocking the dish's view of the sky). These are normal and temporary. Shipshape is designed to handle brief connectivity interruptions gracefully. Sensor data is cached and synced once the connection restores.
  • If outages are frequent, check the Starlink app for obstruction warnings and consider repositioning your dish.

Slow data updates in the app

  • This is unlikely to be a Starlink-specific issue. Check that the gateway is powered on and the ethernet cable is connected.
  • If using a Starlink Ethernet Adapter (Gen 2), try unplugging and reconnecting it.
