How to Change Your Notification Settings

You're in Control

SAM is always watching over your home, but you decide how and when it reaches out to you. Whether you want every update the moment it happens or just a quiet weekly summary, your notification settings let you dial things in to match your lifestyle.

There are three ways SAM can communicate with you:

  • In-app notifications appear inside the Shipshape app in your notification center (the bell icon). They are always there when you open the app.
  • Push notifications pop up on your phone's lock screen or notification shade, even when the app is closed. These are what get your attention right away.
  • Email notifications deliver a digest of activity to your inbox on a daily or weekly schedule.

Each type can be turned on or off independently. You might want push alerts for critical issues like leaks but prefer a weekly email for everything else. That is completely fine.

How to Access Notification Settings

  1. Open the Shipshape app on your phone.
  2. Tap the Menu icon (three lines in the top corner).
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap Notifications.

From here, you will see toggles for each notification category and delivery method.

What You Can Control

Your notification settings are organized by category. Here is what each one covers:

Alert Notifications

These are the critical ones. Alert notifications tell you about equipment issues, water leaks, electrical anomalies, and other problems that SAM detects in your home. They are the core reason Shipshape exists, and we strongly recommend keeping them turned on.

Examples of alert notifications:

  • A water leak detected near your water heater
  • Your HVAC system drawing unusually high power
  • A sensor going offline unexpectedly
  • A safety concern that needs immediate attention

Maintenance Reminders

SAM tracks your equipment and lets you know when routine maintenance is due. Filter changes, annual HVAC tune-ups, water heater flushes, and similar tasks. These reminders help you stay ahead of wear and tear.

Weather Alerts

When severe weather is headed your way, SAM can give you a heads-up along with any steps you should take to protect your home. This includes freeze warnings, storm alerts, and extreme heat advisories.

Weekly Home Health Summary

Once a week, SAM sends you a snapshot of your home's overall health. This includes your Home Health Score, any open alerts, upcoming maintenance, and a summary of recent activity. It is a great way to stay informed without checking the app every day.

Marketing and Tips

Occasional tips on home care, energy savings, and seasonal preparation. These are never urgent and are purely informational. Turn them off if you prefer a quieter experience.

Our Recommendation

Everyone's preferences are different, but here is a starting point that works well for most homeowners:

| Category | Push | In-App | Email | |---|---|---|---| | Alert notifications | ON | ON | ON | | Maintenance reminders | Optional | ON | Optional | | Weather alerts | ON | ON | OFF | | Weekly summary | OFF | ON | ON | | Marketing and tips | OFF | Optional | OFF |

The key principle: keep alert notifications on everywhere. These are the ones that catch leaks, safety issues, and equipment failures early. Everything else is personal preference.

Push Notification Troubleshooting

If you are not receiving push notifications on your phone, the issue is almost always in your phone's system settings rather than the Shipshape app.

For iPhone

  1. Open your phone's Settings app (the gear icon on your home screen).
  2. Scroll down and tap Shipshape.
  3. Tap Notifications.
  4. Make sure Allow Notifications is turned ON.
  5. Confirm that Lock Screen, Notification Center, and Banners are all checked.

For Android

  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps (or Apps & notifications).
  3. Find and tap Shipshape.
  4. Tap Notifications.
  5. Make sure the main notification toggle is ON.
  6. Check that the specific notification channels you want are also enabled.

Still Not Working?

  • Make sure Do Not Disturb is not blocking Shipshape notifications.
  • Try toggling push notifications off and back on in your phone settings.
  • Ensure the Shipshape app is updated to the latest version.
  • Restart your phone. Sometimes a simple reboot clears notification issues.
  • If none of that helps, contact Shipshape support for assistance.

Email Notification Settings

Email notifications are controlled separately from push and in-app notifications. You can choose between a daily digest or a weekly digest, or turn email notifications off entirely.

To configure email delivery:

  1. Go to Settings then Notifications in the app.
  2. Scroll to the Email Preferences section.
  3. Choose your preferred frequency: Daily, Weekly, or Off.

Emails are sent from noreply@shipshape.ai. If you are not seeing them, check your spam or junk folder and add that address to your contacts.

Provider Access

Your service professional may also receive certain alerts about your home. This is by design. When SAM detects something that needs professional attention, your pro gets notified so they can reach out and help.

You can control which alerts are shared with your service professional:

  1. Go to Settings then Notifications.
  2. Scroll to the Provider Access section.
  3. Toggle individual alert types on or off for sharing.

Your pro will always see critical safety alerts. For everything else, the choice is yours.

A Note on Notification Overload

We designed SAM to be respectful of your attention. Unlike apps that ping you constantly to boost engagement metrics, SAM only sends notifications when something genuinely matters. If you ever feel like you are getting too many notifications, adjusting a few toggles in settings should solve the problem quickly.
